Acceptance criteria
What Types of Damage are Acceptable for a Replacement?
We assess banknotes in accordance with the criteria applied by the National Bank of Ukraine to determine their legal tender status. As a rule, damaged banknotes are accepted for exchange provided that at least 55 per cent of the original area remains intact. This applies to the following cases:
- the banknote has a hole or a torn-off piece;
- the banknote is torn or cut into several pieces, including if it has been glued back together;
- the banknote is torn in half, but the series and serial number match on both halves;
- the banknote has been damaged by fire, water or chemicals – provided that it does not crumble during inspection.
If it is difficult to determine by eye how much of the banknote’s surface area remains intact, we measure this precisely using a special grid.
If less than 55 per cent of the surface area remains, or if there are doubts about the banknote’s authenticity, further expert assessment is required. In such cases, we will advise you where to turn.
